Viaducts that are roughly 2.1 kilometres (1.3 miles) long on each end with a 945-meter (3,100-foot) cable-stayed bridge, known as Shoots Bridge, in the middle. The main span is 456 meters (1,496 feet) between pylons.

The approach viaducts are of a segmental bridge design. The crossing forms a very slight reverse "S" curve – the roadway has an approximate east–west alignment at each of the portals, while the central bridge follows an alignment approximately WNW to ESE.

The stay-cable system is made up of 4 planes of 60 guywires consisting of nineteen to seventy-five 15-millimetre segments and ranging in total length from 35 to 243 metres, deployed on either side of the deck and the pylon shafts. The hollow pylon legs, embedded in massive precast foundations, were built on site thanks to 39 lifting operations using 3.8-metre lift increments on average.

Special Inspections, maintenance inspections and inspections for assessment are undertaken as required.

In 2012, tolls passed the £6 mark for the first time. Severn River Crossings were given consent to continue collecting tolls until it had taken an extra £33m bringing the total revenue up to £1.02bn. The bridge—along with the original Severn Bridge and associated crossings—passed into public ownership on 8 January, 2018 and the tolls were abolished.
