HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA, CANADA

Angus L. Macdonald Bridge

Opened 22 April, 1955

Named for a former Nova Scotia premier, it opened as a two-lane bridge with a narrow sidewalk within the roadway deck and converted to a three lane structure with a pedestrian walkway and bicycle lane on outer sides of the deck in 1999.

In 2015, The Big Lift commenced which included replacing the road deck, floor beams, stiffening trusses and suspender ropes on the suspended spans. When completed, a significant amount of the bridge infrastructure was new material. The work was done in segments in cooperation with the community while keeping traffic flowing during the day, but closed during most evening and weekends. During scheduled closures, Halifax Transit operated a shuttle service via the A. Murray MacKay Bridge.
